Command line flasher and drivers under Windows 10

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430-FLASHER, MSP-EXP430F5529LP, MSP-EXP430FR5969, MSP-GANG, MSP430F5510

In the past I've used the TI command line flasher, and the supporting USB drivers, to load firmware into MSP430 devices using the Launchpad, all under XP.  What I see on the TI pages is that this software works with Windows versions up through Win 8.  Can someone confirm whether all of this also works under Windows 10?

Also, I see that there is a version of the flasher software for OS X, but haven't found any OS X drivers for the Launchpad.  Is it now possible to flash from OS X, or are we still missing the drivers?

Thanks

  • Hi George,

You are asking about MSP430-Flasher, correct? I will check with our tools team about the Windows 10 support - thanks for posting as this is an important question as windows 10 grows in popularity and usage.

For OSX: Which LaunchPad are you using? The older emulators do not have OSX support at all (even in CCS) but the newer ones do - see www.ti.com/.../slau647 MSP Debugger's Guide - you can see in the table 1. Debug Probes Features and Device Compatibility that only newer LaunchPads which have eZ-FET or eZ-FET Lite are supported on OSX (MSP-EXP430F5529LP, MSP-EXP430FR5969, and newer etc are supported, MSP-EXP430G2 is not). MSP430-Flasher lists OSX support, and there is an installer, however I see that usually the installer would point you to the stand-alone driver download (if you don't already have CCS or IAR installed - do you?) and looking at the standalone driver install page here: software-dl.ti.com/.../index_FDS.html I only see a Windows installer. So I'll ask the tools team about that as well.

    Regards,
    Katie

Not by TI, but there is/was solution by using mspdebug with modified OSX driver.

I guess that OSX drivers (for FET's) related to MSP-DEBUG-STACK should be here...

    George,

BTW, if you need faster flashing tool than there is my MSP-GANG like flasher, that is working on OS X (from Lion till Yosemite) using native OS X drivers (there is no need to install anything).

  • Hi George,

I got confirmation from our tools team that Windows 10 is officially supported - I'll work to get the page on TI.com updated to reflect that to avoid confusion.

For OSX stand-alone drivers software-dl.ti.com/.../index_FDS.html it sounds like in the current download that is not there yet, but they are planning to do an update to add OSX (I don't have timeline though).

I hope this will be enough to get you up and running!

    Katie
  • Hi George,

Did this answer your question - were you able to get up and running on Windows 10 perhaps?

    Katie
  • Hi Katie. Thanks for the responses. Sorry to be so long answering, but I had to be away for a while. So let me be sure I understand. This would be for me and a number of others who have the Launchpad MSP-EXP430G2, and I believe everyone has v1.5 of that device. It looks like I installed from MSPFlasher-1_03_10_00-windows-installer.zip for the flasher, and from slac524.zip for the drivers on my XP machine. And you are saying that those do indeed also work on all subsequent Windows versions up through Win10.

As for OSX, that's not really relevant to me, but I just wanted to know in case anyone asked. If I understand correctly, at the moment there is no path to using OSX with the EXP430G2, except possibly using the 43oh USB stuff.

Thanks very much for running this down for me.

    George
  • Hi George,

No problem - this is good information to get out there (and I've also let our website people know to update the msp430flasher page to indicate windows 10 support in the description to make this clearer in the future.)

I know from our tools team that the MSPFlasher supports Windows 10, but let me double-check on the drivers for slac524 just to be safe.

    Regards,
    Katie
  • To confirm: I just got news back from the tools development team also confirming that the drivers have also been tested and work with Windows 10.

Ok, that's great.  I expected as much, but just wanted to be sure.  Thanks very much for your help.
