MSP430FR4133 LaunchPad failure to connect in VMWare XP-SP3 Virtual Machine

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR4133

Hello,

I'm running VMWare Workstation on Windows 8.  My development virtual machine is XP-SP3.  Unfortunately, it appears the MSP drivers (V1.4.0) don't work in this VM.   They are loaded by the device manager correctly when the USB cable is plugged in but hang when the driver tries to initialize the interface.   They hang either when trying to connect to the Launchpad through the IAR IDE or when trying to program the device using the MSPFlasher program.

I can connect and flash the launchpad through the Windows 8 host just fine.

Has anyone found a way to configure a XP VM to work with the MSP430FR4133  LaunchPad?

Thanks,

- Dave

  • Hi Dave,

Based on your earlier thread e2e.ti.com/.../551342, I inquired with our tools team about virtual machine support. They replied that virtual machines do not work reliably with USB and it is not recommended. They said that it is not related to the MSP tools, but rather related to the virtual USB driver for the virtual machine, so unfortunately there's not really anything that our tools can do about it - I've seen others experience similar issues before with virtual machines not just with MSP tools but with USB port management in general.

I know this is probably not the answer you were hoping for. You mentioned in the other thread that you were using virtual machines to keep the development environments for different clients separate. If by this you mean maintaining for example an IAR/CCS installation for each customer of yours, you should be able to maintain separate installations by creating separate install folders for IAR and installing it multiple times - that way you can maintain different versions, etc. I know that is not as separate as running in separate virtual machines, but it would likely simplify your support so you don't run into USB issues like this - just one suggestion.

    Best of luck,
    Katie
  • Thanks for your help Katie!  You are correct that I can do the development w/out the VM.  I was just hoping I could keep everything self contained in the VM.

Once again thanks for your support.
