EZ430USB dongle not talking to Vista / XP virtual machines on OSX (VMware.)

Hi,

this has probably be asked a million times before but I can not get IAR Kickstart to talk to the module. Upadated to the latest version for Win7 64bit.

Seems to hang the IAR software when it starts the download/debug. Removal of the duaghter board throws an error and returns control to the software.  One thing I did notice in the windows driver management is that there is now no serial adapter! Only the MSP-FET430UIF -VCP. Is there supposed to be a serial driver?

Incidentally I can connect to and read the device with the Elprotonic software.

Thoughts, and running on a dedicated win computer i snot really a viable option.

Thanks

  • Hi sean T,

I'm sorry, but your question is a little confusing! You try to run IAR Embedded Workbench in a virtual machine (guest OS is Windows 7) and the host OS is Mac OSX, right?

I'm a MAC-user too and I'm running the tools in a virtual machine without problems. Be shure you installed the VMware tools since you will need them for propper work of the virtual machine (i.e. when dealing with USB devices). You can install them by using the link in VIRTUAL MACHINE menu.

Also check if you're using the latest version of VMware fusion which is Version 3.1.0 (261058).

From which tool is the EZ430USB dongle your're using? Make shure it's firmware supports the device you want to debug.

    Kind regards

  • HI,

sorry for the confusion, 1000001 and one things to do.

Yes you are correct, working inside Vmware, guest os Win7 64bit. Host os OSX10.6.

VMware tools installed and correctly assigns the device to the guest OS. In the guest OS I see a device appear but no serial device.  Thus when I go to download /debug through IAR it hangs the IDE.

It is the EZ430USB dongle with the standard daughter board. 2012uP.

Do you see two new devices, when you plug in the dongle?

    Thanks

    Sean

  • Hi Sean,

the ez430USB from the ez430F2013 tool will show you two device under windows device manager; the device is called MSP-FET430UIF under MULTI-PORT SERIAL ADAPTERS and there's another under SERIAL PORTS.

You can have a look at the wiki page for some more information on the tool and also some troubleshooting info http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/EZ430-F2013.

I would recmmend de-installing the tools under device manager and then re-installing the driver (they were installed together with IAR or CCS installation).

  • Yep. tried uninstall /  reinastal  to no avail.

I get the 430UIF under Ports (LPT and COM)

assigned to com4 (VCP) no device under Multiport serial adapters. I suspect that this is the problem.  How do I force the install for that adapter as it does not seem to see the device.

    Sean

  • I hope you have figured this out, but there is no resolution here.  I have tried to deinstall/reinstall the drivers.

I am having the same problem:  I do not see a multi-port serial adaptor, and am unable to force the install of such an adaptor.

How did you correct this?  I can compile software, but not debug/download.

  • Hi John,

which version of VMware do you use and which Windows do you try to use the ez430USB with?

Be shure to install the VMware tools. With your VMware virtual machine running, insert the ez430USB in your computers USB port. You should get promted were to assign the device to (VMware OS or MAC OS X).

Now complete the driver installation for your Windows guest.

  • VM Ware 5.0.3 and Windows 7 64-bit

Tools are installed and the windows guest drivers are installed.  Late last night I got CCS 5 working, so I guess I will use that versus IAR.

    Thanks!
