CCS/MSP-FET/MSP430: Problem using UART and Spy-bi-wire at the same time

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET

Hello all,

I am using the MSP-FET (connected to Win8 via USB) with an MSP-FET-432ADPTR in order to debug my code and have a virtual UART port. While the UART pins are NOT plugged in I can observe the correct UART behavior via oscilloscope; however, if I plug in the UART Tx-to-Rx (connecting my MSP to the FET adapter) my MSP-FET won't let me step through code AND the mode/power LEDs begin blinking in a slow, alternating fashion. If I pull the UART pin out it goes right back to normal operation. Furthermore, I get no UART output on my virtual COM port.

Is there some setup or options required to use the backchannel UART and spy-bi-wire at the same time? I also have an MSP430 Launchpad and was unable to get UART pass-through for that either (debugging with FET, did not get any outputs on my com port)

I'm happy to provide more information if it would be helpful to solve this issue.

Thanks for your time!

  • Ethan,
Can you describe the connections between the adapter (pins 11 and 17) and the MSP432(pins)?

    Thanks,
    Chris
  • Ethan,

Your situation described is an odd one.  The MSP Debugger User's Guide gives Table 5 in section 5.6.4 showing the LED blink codes.  In this case, both LEDs blinking slowly would mean a Firmware Update is in progress and advise you not to disconnect your device.  The fact that you removing the UART pin causes this blinking pattern is surprising.

Please note that TXD on the launchpad will connect to UART_TXD on the adapter and similar for RXD.  It sounds like from above description that you have this backwards.  However, this should not cause the blinking LEDs as you described.

I'd like to ask you a few questions about your setup.

    1.  Have you checked your COM ports using the windows Device Manager to ensure you are using the correct COM port for the MSP UART?  Please try this and before going to next questions.

    2. What device/setup are you using here?  Is it an MSP432P401R Launchpad or a custom design board/other?  You mentioned using the MSP430 Launchpad with MSP432 Adapter?  I just want to verify you are using an MSP432 device? If you are using an MSP430, that changes the direction of this conversation since I have assumed your are using an MSP432.

    3.  Will you please describe to me in more detail your setup?  Including if it is launchpad or custom designed board, how you are connecting the MSP432 to the FET Adapter (jumper wires?), and detailed pinout describing which pins you connected on your device to which pins on the adapter.  Please double check your connections also to make sure your pinout in schematics matches your desired pinout as well as your actual connections match as well.  I suspect your pinout maybe incorrect based on the odd LED blinking criteria.

Below I explain what I did to get this running on my own MSP432 Launchpad device:

I used an example code for UART from resource explorer at dev.ti.com.

My connections are with jumper wires from the MSP432 Launcpad to the 20 pin JTAG connector on the adapter.

POWER Pins: VCC_OUTPUT of adapter to 3V3 on launchpad. Also, GND to GND, of course. Making sure to put switch on adapter to VCC_OUTPUT.

TMS/TCK/TDI/TDO of launchpad to the same, respectively, on adapter's 20 pin JTAG.

RST of launchpad to RST of adapter 20 pin JTAG.

TXD of launchpad to UART_TXD of adapter, and RXD of launchpad to UART_RXD of adapter.

(Schematics for the adapter 20 pin JTAG are available here, if needed)

I would recommend trying this configuration and comparing it to your own.

I look forward to getting this solved for you, Ethan!

  • Chris,

This issue was due to reading the pinout of the adapter incorrectly - the UART TX pin was connected incorrectly.
