MSP430F5659: ADC12_A REF+ pin current when shorted

Hi,

My customer is using MSP430F5659 and ADC12_A REF+ is used as reference output.
REF+ is connected to GND via a capacitance on board.

Customer wonders if the capacitance is broken and REF+ is shorted to GND, overcurrent may be observed.
Or there is overcurrent protection inside the device ?
According to datasheet (SLAS700C) page 78, MAX current for IREF+ is specified for each configuration.

So the current is limited to these max values ?

    I don't know the behaviour of a shorted REF+ output, but the given values you have posted are the typical and maximum operating currents for the module while it is operating properly, so no shorted output. Furthermore these values do not include any load at the reference output.

  • The REF output has a certain output impedance (see the following specification of the regulation), but there is no overcurrent protection specified, so there probably isn't one.

    I would echo what Clemens and Dennis said. The currents specified are for the REF Module when used properly. No characterization is done in the specific case you cite as this is a valid use case. From what I see on the pin out schematics, when the pin is in a mode for the Reference module, I see no over current protection diodes.
