MSP-GANG: Increasing Target supply current

Hello Team,

As per the user guide, the maximum current per target is 50 mA with a maximum threshold up to 60 mA. Is it possible to increase the maximum current further to 65 mA at 3V3 since the target device requires so?

Or is it possible to connect the VT0 with VT1 and EXT0 with VEXT1 to double the supply current of one target (Terminals shown in Figure 5-3 of the users guide SLAU358).

    I don't recommend making the connections you've described above. If you'd like to exceed the 60mA limit, you need to supply external power to your target device as described in Section 1.3 of SLAU358. You need to ensure the JTAG connections are properly setup for external VCC as well as the MSP-GANG software is setup for external power as well.

    Unfortunately, the external power supply is not an option because the target device is supposed to be used on the field hence with no possibility for an external power supply.

    Could you please recommend another alternative solution or an alternative programmer for MSP430 devices?

  • I (somehow) understand limiting current when all 8 target devices are connected. 8 * 60 mA = 480 mA plus some current needed for master device (500 mA total). But I don't understand limiting current to 60 mA if number of connected devices is less than 8.

    My SBW+ (MSP-GANG like flasher) can supply up to 1A of total current (if USB port is able) to all target devices. But it is completely different animal.

    The maximum current supplied by the programmer per target is 50 mA ( and the maximum current limit threshold is 60 mA). As u said the overall current limit when 8 targets are connected would be 400 mA ( the over all current available via USB would be 500 mA but 150 mA is taken by the MSP-GANG hence 350 mA is available for the targets).

    The issue is the maximum current available per target and not the overall current limitations.

    Thank you for your suggestions, but i am looking for a alternative solution from TI.

    Yes, I understand you, and don't understand designers (Elprotronic / TI) why they made it on this way.

    Have you considered using an MSP-FET? These devices can provide up to 100mA of current to the target.

    Why is limited to 100 mA? Why is not able to provide 300 mA?
