I am also having a similar issue with the MSP-GANG and programming with the JTAG port. I am getting Error 23. Device will fail connection. I have downloaded updated drivers and this still does not correct the problems. I have complete sucess using the MSP-FET430UIF using the same programming port on my PCB assembly. I would like a solution as well. Sorry I do not have the answer.

    Hi Eric,

    I'd like to help you with your issue. Can you please provide information about your MSP-GANG configuration - what settings you have selected? The easiest way might be to provide screenshots of the MSP-GANG GUI showing your settings. Please also include the MSP-GANG firmware version found under About > About - is it the latest version 1.2.6.0?

    Can you provide more information about which MSP430 you are trying to program and your programming connections - are you trying to use SBW or full JTAG? Is the MSP430 externally powered (e.g. battery or power supply) or powered from the MSP-GANG programmer?

    The device is the MSP430G2955. I had conversation with Elprotonic regarding this issue. I must have missed the notes on the proper capacitor size on the Reset line. I was originally using a 0.1uF capacitor. This worked well with the MSP430F6721, MSP430F2350, and the MSP430G2203. However it was not suitable for the MSP430G2955. I changed the capacitor value to 2.2nF and had better success with that simple change.
    Note: I am using JTAG without external power supply. I did try an external supply (configured the MSP-GANG for that purpose) and that was not sucessful. Issue is resolved with change in capacitor value.

    Firmware: 01.01.06.00 (latest firmware update). I am also quite familiar with the MSP-GANG programmer (have been using the latest version since 2012) and older versions since 2007. Issue was PCBA related. Change in component value corrected the problem.

    Thanks for providing the summary of your solution.

    For others coming to this thread later, the recommended capacitor on RST for most SBW-capable devices is no greater than 2.2nF. You can find this in the device user's guide under Connection of Unused pins, in the Application information section on newer datasheets, as well as in the hardware tool's user's guide www.ti.com/.../slau278 Chapter 2.
