MSP430G2533: SW UART max baud rate

Hi Alberto,

The MSP430G2533 is able to achieve that baud rate. Table 15-4 in the MSP430x2xx Family User's Guide provides a list of common baud rates and the proper register setting to achieve them. We also provide a baud rate calculator as well.

A word of caution though. Users commonly develop with the MSP430G2553 on the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad. This LaunchPad has a hardware limited max baud rate of 9600 but the G2553 can achieve higher rates.

If I remember right it can work on 115200 bps, too. BTW, it can be implemented without using timer.

Such a high speed SW UART will consume lot of CPU time, could impact IRQ latency of other peripherals or even render processing of such close to impossible. In my opinion SW implementation will allow only single UART channel anyway, so what's the point to not use microcontroller with hardware UART?

Reason of SW UART is that customer will need two UARTs, including so the one available in HW.

Unless besides having/handling two UART ports application shall do something else reliably, then I would suggest to consider msp430 with two hardware UARTs. After all price difference is not that big: msp430fr2433 1.15$ @ 1k, msp430g2553 0.90$ @ 1k. In addition to extra uart you get bigger RAM too.
