MSP430F247: Firmware upgrade by RS485

Part Number: MSP430F247
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F1611, MSPBSL

Hi

My customer has a MSP430F247 firmware upgrade demand as a below picture.

ARM MCU read firmware from USB disk, send it to MSP430F1611 by UART. Then MSP430F1161 update firmware to F247.

There are 8 unit standalone board connect to F1611. Each board has a F247 with a external watchdog, and every board is standalone power supply.

Our idea is

1. Do firmware upgrade by BSL one by one. Disable other 7 unit F247 board power when do firmware upgrade to one F247 by BSL at one time. But RST pin is also controlled by external watchdog. Another challenge is F1611 has't more GPIO except Txd and Rxd.

2. Upgrade firmware by customized code. Copy code to running in RAM when receive specific command on RS485. Then copy received code programming to flash. Do you have reference code?

Thanks.

  • Hi Daniel,

How does the customer plan to disable the other 7 F247 boards and the external watchdog of the device it is currently attempting to program? RS485 should not be considered with communication between two MSP430s but multiple devices cannot be supported by a single UART bus.

BSLDEMO is provided in the deprecated folder of the MSPBSL_Scripter download package (SLAU655) as an example of how to use a MSP430 BSL host and MSPBoot (SLAA600) provides resources for creating a custom main-memory bootloader. Both of these will have to be altered for RS485 communication.

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • Thanks, Ryan.

We are considering whether replace F1611 by F5 series for more flexible GPIO to control other 7pcs F247 board power.
SLAA600 is very useful for us, we are looking in it now. Thanks!
