programing and debugging msp430g2231

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2231

Hi!

I have the eZ430-RF2500 kit which i bought last year , before the launch of msp430g2x31 series.Though the msp430g2x31 series too has the spy-bi-wire interface i am not able to debug and program it with the above mentioned kit.

kindly clarify what could be the possible reasons?

Regards,

Pratiksha

  • There are many possible reasons.

Did you connect the hardware correctly?

Did you use the correct software? Did you use it in the correct way?

  • SLAU278E page 16 suggests that the ez430-RF2500 FET supports the G2x31 device, and it doesn't seem to qualify that with any conditions depending on the emulator version or firmware, so if I'm not missing some exception, it SHOULD be officially supported that it should work with the G2x31 devices via SBW programming.

That said, there are also some pages on the wikis that suggest that some ez430 FET models can be unofficially upgraged to new firmware to support 'more features or additional devices' though this isn't always a possibility depending on the model of FET you have, and it isn't incredibly clear what exact benefits there are to doing the upgrade based on what model and revision you already have.  But other than simple software / hardware configuration errors which are not the fault of the FET, it is the only possible major configuration change that I am aware of that you could investigate as being a possible point of incompatibility.

I do not suggest performing the upgrade unless you find some supporting information to suggest that it will benefit your use cases of interest.

  • Relevant question: has anyone used SUCCESSFULLY used the spy-by-wire interface implemented by EZ430-RF2500 or EZ430-F2013 to program one of the new G-series parts?

(I was thinking of doing this as well while I wait for my LaunchPad to arrive...)

  • Hi!

Had some issues with the hardware. Have solved them. Now I am able to program n debug msp430g2231 with the same ez430 :-)

    Thanx to all

Which kind of issues and how did you solve them? It could be of interest for others with a similar problem.

  • Nothing big...just a silly mistake...

The circuit of which MSP430g2231 was a part was accidently pulling the programming data line low.

Otherwise to program MSP430g2231 with eZ430 one just requires  4 pins (Vcc,GND,SBWTDIO,SBWTCK) and the following external components

    (1) 47k resistance between Vcc and SBWTDIO.

    (2) 100nf between Vcc and GND

    Regards,

    Pratiksha
