Communication Error with MSP430F2132

Hello Everyone,

I am getting the communication error while trying to program MSP430F2132 with MSP-FET430UIF. I am using IAR Embedded Workbench for MSP430 4.20.1 and testing the FET example msp430x2xx_fet_1.s43. I received a communication error saying "Please connect the device and press retry to reconnect or cancel." If I click on retry I got the following errors:

Interface dll version 2.3.5.0

Fatal error: Failed to identify device (Occasionally, the error "Failed to re-initialize" also appears)

Session aborted!

Failed to load debugee: ......

I have checked the hardware connection and the driver (which appears as MSP-FET430UIF - Serial Port (COM5) in my PC running the Windows XP operating system). I have also tried to re-install IAR on different computers (both PC and several Laptops). Unfortunately, I continued getting the same error every time.

Could someone give me some suggestions? Thanks a lot!

Hi Menezes,

I would recommend using the latest version of IAR! You can download the Kickstart version here (http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/iar-kickstart.html).

Hello aBUGSworstnightmare,

I have tried the latest version of IAR as you suggested. Unfortunately, I still cannot download the program into the board and the IAR shows the following errors:

Interface dll version 2.4.5.3

No device found

Failed to load debugee:......

I cannot figure out what is the problem. Could you give me more suggestions?

Hi Menezes,

do you use a custom target or do you use a TI target board? If you're using a custom board pls re-check your JTAG connections (you can find them in the Hardware Users Guide http://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slau278).

Hi aBUGSworstnightmare,

Thanks for your suggestions very much! I am using a custom board with MSP430F2132. I tried the other progammer eZ430-F2013 and my code can be downloaded into the board successfully. However, when I switched to the MSP-FET430UIF, the communication errors appear and the code cannot be downloaded. Do you have any idea why this happened? I really appreciated your help.

Hi Menezes,

so you're using Spy-Bi-Wire connection for downloading your code (since this is what eZ430U does). Be shure to connect your MSP-FET430UIF as shown on page 28, Fig 2.2 of the MSP430 Hardware Users Guide.

Hello Menezes, I too seem to have the same problem,, but the last suggestion still gave me no solution. Did you find the reason why the JTAG will not communicate with the MSP430f2132 ?? Please advise

Hello Every One, Turns out all I had to do is make sure that I had the 4-wire JTAG option selected in the menu Project, Options, FET Debugger, over the default 2-Wire (Spy-by-wire) in IAR. All is okay. Duh! Thank you 'Every Body' for all the information posted on this.

I have the same problem with you. I cannot debug my code. The windows appear a dialog "communication error please connect the device and press retry to reconnect or press cancel to abort"。
How to solve it??

Tony,

Not totaly sure why, but the ElProtrinic MSP430 works much better than the Ti MSP-FET tool on some devices.

Additionally, much of our SBW interfacing issues has come down to properly sizing the cap on the 'RST' pin in SBW applications. Some devices (some die revisions) seem to be effected more than others.

Seems that the JTAB and SBW interfacing is not the same across the Ti MSP430 line. I suspecting this is due to legacy chips from newer chips as well as production issues over time.

We have the Ti MSP-FET and ElPRotronics Tools standing by at all times for various projects.
