MSP430F5438: Audio Codec

Part Number: MSP430F5438
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC23B, BT-MSPAUDSINK-RD, TIDM-FILTERING-SIGNALPROCESSING, MSP-EXP430FR5994, BOOSTXL-AUDIO, CC2640R2F

Hi There,

I have required a solution for bluetooth audio where both Audio in and out will be present. I have found some of the eval boards. One board named MSP430F5438 experimenter board where there is no external codec is used. Audio is taken care by MSP430 itself. Whereas there is Audio sink and source board based on MSP430F5229IRGCR. Here we have external audio codec for audio in or audio out. If I want to modify according to my solution I will use a audio codec like TLV320AIC23B which can be used as audio in and out.

1. What's the use of external audio codec in audio sink and source board? Why not MSP430 can be used for that?

2. Which will be good solution, using external audio codec or not?

3. Is there any part difference is present in MSP430 in both the boards?

4. Is there any eval board available for my requirement?(Audio sink and source at the same time)

  • Hi Arun,

If your application requires multiple audio streams, I'd recommend using an external audio codec. If you have specific questions about codecs, please start a new thread in our Audio Converters Forum.

You can use a MSP430 as a host that can boot-up an external codec. Please refer to the following app notes for more information.

This will depend on your application (audio quality, bandwidth, SNR, power consumption, etc.). If you have finalized your audio requirements, I'd run these past our audio experts in the Audio Converters Forum. The following resources may be helpful.

It'd be helpful to know the specific part numbers for the boards you're mentioning. In general, you can compare the datasheets for these two devices to learn about the device-level differences. I'm assuming that you're referring to the BT-MSPAUDSINK-RD TI Design, which is an excellent reference.

Besides the BT-MSPAUDSINK-RD TI Design, we offer the following evaluation boards. The TIDM-FILTERING-SIGNALPROCESSING TI Design is based on the MSP-EXP430FR5994 LaunchPad and the BOOSTXL-AUDIO Booster Pack. This design leverages the low-energy accelerator (LEA) to perform advanced filtering and signal processing.

With our recent SimpleLink Platform release, the SimpleLink MSP432 can be easily used with our newer Bluetooth modules like the CC2640R2F. This approach may be a good fit for your application, and the following app note highlightes the MSP432's processing power.

    Hopefully this helps!

  • Hi James,

Thank you a lot for your kind suggestion. But I'm unable to proceed with this. Basically we have requirement on custom headset design. Where we will have requirement like,

    1. We can listen music from mobile.

    2. It should have feature of answering the mobile call.

    3. It should have feature of GPS navigation from mobile.

We need a development board for our testing. Please suggest any eval board for this.
