MSP432P401R: DCO operating frequency exceeds 48MHz

Part Number: MSP432P401R

Datasheet states max CPU frequency of 48MHz.

Table 5-11 of datasheet states DCO center frequency range 5 at 46.162MHz to 49.836MHz, and DCO frequency range 5 of 31.36 to 52MHz.

How do I assure customer that DCO frequency range 5 is supported, when 49.836MHz & 52MHz exceeds the spec of 48MHz? Is there any official document to clarify this?

  • You can use a higher DCO frequency as long as you divide down the resulting clock to an allowed value (with DIVM etc.).

In any case, the calibrated factory setting (DCOTUNE=0) for 48 MHz is intended to be simple to use; it is safe even if the actual frequency happens to be a little bit higher.
  • Eddie,
There is not an official document to clarify this. As Clemens has pointed out, using the factory calibrated settings is safe. I will request a datasheet update to make this more clear, but I believe the recommend operating condition maximum for MCLK should be the 49.836Mhz maximum found for the DCO calibrated setting (internal resistor mode).

    Regards,
    Chris
