MSP432P401R: Powering the MSP432 Externally

Part Number: MSP432P401R

Hi,

I wanted to know how to power the MSP432 externally. I was going to power it using 3 AA (1.2V each) batteries in series 3.6V on the lower rightmost set of pins (J6) but I wasn't sure if that is the right thing to do, is this to high of a voltage to be handled? I was originally using the USB for power so would I need to remove any of the jumpers from the row that contains TXD, RXD, CTS, RTS, 3V and 5V if I want to use batteries instead of the USB. I also have some stuff using the 3.3V pin (J1) would this be affected?

Thanks

  • Per the absolute maximum ratings in the datasheet, the max supply voltage for the MSP432 is 4.17V.  So if your battery maximum voltage is 3.6V then you should be ok. The 3.3V pin on the 3 pin header at the lower right of the board, according to the schematic in the Launchpad user's guide, is electrically connected to the 3.3V pin on J1.  So as long as the electronics connected to that pin can tolerate 3.6V you should be ok there as well.

  • Ok so if I drop the external power voltage to 3.3V first and then put it on the J6 pins everything should work (on J1) like it was when i was using the USB power.

    Thanks
  • That is correct.  A minor correction to my earlier post, although the device will tolerate 4.17V as a maximum the recommended operating range is from 1.71 to 3.7V.
