BOOSTXL-K350QVG-S1: Can the TFT display be used without the the VUSB or 5V supply for back light.

Part Number: BOOSTXL-K350QVG-S1

Hi,

I am interfacing KENTEC K350 TFT display with the MSP432P401R EVM. The TFT display requires two power sources, 3.3 V & 5V. According to the datasheet the 5V is required for the display backlight. But I tried runninng it without the 5V supply and It was working fine. So I just wish to know what difference does it make and will it cause any damage to the TFT, if 5V is not provided.

Regards,

Amit K

  • Amit,
Looking at the datasheet for the BoosterPack, I don't see any connections to the 5V other than the backlight driver. So, there doesn't appear to be any risk with not driving it to 5V. The BOOSTXL-K350QVG-S1 schematic shows a step-up converter which takes the 5V and drives the LED-A and LED-K inputs of the Kentec display itself. This part (AIC1896) has an input range of 2.5v to 10v, so if there is any voltage in that range on the 5V0 pin, then the converter will create the appropriate voltage to drive the backlight. Also note that the booster pack pinout shows a pin LED_PWM that, when driven low, will shut off the AIC1896 converter and disable the backlight. I would recommend driving this pin low if you are not putting a voltage on the 5V0 pin at all, or if you just don't want to turn on the backlight.

    Regards,
    Bob
