About external power

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-TS430PZ100A

In slau278e.pdf, 2.2 External Power (page 29), there is the following sentence.

"If the external supplied voltage differs from that of the FET interface module, the target socket module must be modified so that the externally supplied voltage is routed to the FET interface module."

Does somebody know how much of the difference becomes problem? Are the 3.1V for external supply, and 3.3V FET interface problematic?

And I do not clearly undestand about "... is routed to the FET interface module". What exactly should I modify my own board to avoid this problem? I am refering connection of MSP-TS430PZ100A, but it is not clear which part I should follow for my own board.

  • Hi OKY,

look at the figures 2.1 and 2.2 in this manual (page 27 and 28). There are the signals from the JTAG interface named 'VCC TOOL' (pin 2 of the JTAG) and 'VCC TARGET' (pin 4 of the JTAG).

If your target is supplied externally you should connect VCC TARGET. Now your FET can sense the voltage level and can adjust its outputs accordingly.

You do not need to make any modifikations to your MSP-TS430PZ100A! Place the jumper on JP3 to 2-3 (default is 1-2 = internal (tool) power) and connect your external power source to J5 (pin 1 is VCC, 2 and 3 were GND). See figure B-32 on page 84 for this.

Thank you very much for your reply, aBUGSworstnightmare.

I connect VCC TARGET to the JTAG interface for my own board. So this problem does not occur, doesn't?

    Best regards
