CCS/MSP-FET430UIF: Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found

Part Number: MSP-FET430UIF

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

CCS is no longer finding my USB_FET.  It appears to be a problem with the driver.  When I tried using a new device I got a driver installation problem as shown below.

None of the other forum posts have helped so far.  Where do I start for trouble shooting this problem?

Thanks,

Travis

  • What was changed in your system that caused the issue (new CCS version, different PC/OS, etc.) and have you attempted reverting to an older setup to temporarily fix the problem? Have you tried downloading the low-level USB drivers from the MSPDS tools page?

  • Nothing has changed on the system I am using. It has a CCS 6.1.1 install from about 18 months ago. I also tried installing the low level drivers from the MSPDS tools and it did not help.

In desperation i grabbed all the MSP-FETs I had available and tried them all and I found one that works. And it is a bit different from the others. It has black soldermask instead of blue. What is different about this one that allows it to work?

  • I would recommend upgrading to CCS v7 which is provided for free. You can try out the MSPDS Debugger Up- and Downgrade tool to see if this fixes the problem: processors.wiki.ti.com/.../MSPDS_Debugger_Up-_and_Downgrade

This page also details the MSP-FET430UIF version differences. If you have any other computers to test with then I would recommend experimenting with those as well. You should consider getting a MSP-FET as the MSP-FET430UIF is not recommended for new designs.

  • I did a fresh CCS7 install on a lab workstation and all MSP-FET430UIF sticks work with no issues.  So I assume a upgrade to CCS7 will fix the issue on my laptop too. I have used many of the ez430 target boards in some of my lab bench setups as boot strap devices or serial translators.  They don't have the 14pin header that fits the MSP-FET430 cable so that is why I still try to use the UIF version.

    Thanks for the help!
