MSP430FR5994: Launchpad... No USB FET was found

Part Number: MSP430FR5994
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430WARE

I've been fiddling around for a while now and have been getting messages like

1. No USB FET was found:

- although I have not altered any jumpers on the Launchpad since I received it

- when the Launchpad powers up via the USB connector, the red and green LEDs flash alternately for a second

2. Cannot find.... examples....outofbox.projectspec

No clue what can be causing item 1.

For item 2, perhaps path to directories is messed up, because projectspec is certainly in the ti directory. Should I uninstall and try again. So far I have not been able to run even one example because of items 1 and 2 above, in spite of extensive documentation.

  • Hello David,

If you have not altered any jumper connections on the launchpad then it seems like it must be a software issue. Please completely uninstall CCS and download the latest version of CCS from processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Download_CCS

Once the latest version is installed, open the Resource Explorer and scroll until you see the software package downloader for MSP430Ware. Download this software package through the Resource Explorer. This provides example code for all of our devices and if you follow on the left panel of the Resource Explorer: "Software->MSP430Ware->Devices->MSP430FR5XX_6XX->MSP430FR5994->Peripheral Examples->Register Level" you will be able to see example code for the device. Import one of the examples to CCS and try building it and programming it to your launchpad.

    Hope this helps!

  • David,

If you think this problem is solved please go ahead and select that my above post resolved your question so that we can close this thread.

    Thanks!

  • Regarding "No USB FET was found", the problem was solved by replacing the USB cable.

Regarding my inability to run the OutoftheBox software, reinstallation of CCS did not solve the issue (and I got the same errors on two computers with two sets of CCS), so I must be doing something wrong. Nevertheless, although I can't run OutoftheBox examples in the way described by TI as a first example, I have been able to create a similar project, build, run, modify, build, run, etc. I am not yet able to do anything sophisticated, but I have a whole list of experiments of increasing complexity planned. Don't worry, I will be back to the Forum if I get stuck. Thanks for your interest. All of these problems are unexpected because I have the same stuff easily running on a RaspberryPi clone along with a much, much larger program controlling small computers in a distributed network. I am working toward replacing the RPi clone with the LaunchPad consuming mWs, hopefully.... but that transition seems to be difficult.

  • David,

I am very sorry you still can't get the OutoftheBox example working. This is usually a straightforward process but there might some some small setting or project path wrong in your setup. Regardless, I'm glad you are able to program your device now and a great place to start to learn how to use it is the datasheet, user guide, and the software examples I referenced above!

    Best regards,
