Make sure your MSP-EXP430FR6989 LaunchPad is emulating on your system as both a MSP Application UART1 and Debug Interface. Select the correct device inside of Energia's Tools -> Board tab. The GND, 3V3, SBWTDIO, and SBWTCK jumpers of J101 should be connected. Please provide your OS & Energia versions as well as the exact error message if you continue to experience issues.

Error compiling for board MSP-EXP430FR6989LP.

Getting this error again. I am using Energia 1.6.10E18 on Windows 7

Have you ever used Energia before? Do you have any other LaunchPad variants that you can test? Try re-installing it and ensure that the default location (C drive) is used. Do you get any errors if using a different IDE such as CCS or FET-Pro430?
