CCS/MSP-EXP430F5529LP: eZ-FET Lite firmware upgrade issues

Part Number: MSP-EXP430F5529LP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET, ENERGIA

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I've some issues with my MSP launchpads, every time I have to update the board it "bricks" (and is such a pain to recover it).

First, this message appears at CCS, nothing unusual:

MSP430: Error initializing emulator: A firmware update is required for the MSP430 Debug Interface (MSP-FET430UIF / MSP-FET / eZ-FET). Click the "Update" button to update the firmware and launch your debug session (this may require several update steps).  DO NOT UNPLUG THE INTERFACE DURING THE UPDATE.

But when the update starts, the launchpad LED101 and LED102 remain on and nothing happens...this occurs with the EXP-MSP430FR5994 as well. It stays forever at this window:

I recall that I had the same problem in the past, but using energia. The launchpads simply refuses to update properly the "first" time. It's some configuration problem?

I'm using CCS v7 and Windows 10 x64.

Thanks!

  • Hello Helder,

Thanks for your detailed post, and I'm sorry that you're experiencing issues upgrading the firmware. Is there a chance that you're using a USB hub when the issue happens? If so, does the issue go away when you connect directly to your PC?

I see that you're using CCS v7. What's the specific version (e.g. v7.2.0, etc.)? On the PC side, are you using a USB3 port?

  • Hello James,

I'm using the USB directly from the motherboard (USB3.0 port). I'm using CCS v7.4, but the problem occurred with older versions as well, including other software like Energia.

Now that you've mentioned it, I tried with the USB2.0 and it worked! Too bad I'll have to disconnect my keyboard to do the procedure (my motherboard has only two USB2.0 ports, and the KB refuses to accept USB3.0, maybe I have to reinstall the driver), but at least I've no need to perform eZ-FET recovery every update!

Before that, I discovered that if I change the USB port (still 3.0) after corrupting the firmware, it would restore without problems. Not sure why this behavior though...

    Thank you!

  • Excellent! Thanks for letting us know that you figured out a workaround. USB3 has definitely been an ongoing challenge for us, especially across so many different PC manufacturers. I'll be sure to pass along your issue to our software team as another data point.

Also, thank you for marking the thread resolved! Hopefully this will help others with the same issue.

    Regards,

    James
