MSP430 Typo????

One of my customers made the following observation.

Could someone please comment on this observation?

I noticed that in both the MSP430F543x and MSP430F563x datasheets, the storage temperature range goes up to +105 degrees Celsius, but the maximum allowable junction temperature is only +95 degrees.  This seems like a typographical error to me, since the junction temperature would eventually reach the storage temperature.  (The maximum recommended operating temperature is +85 degrees Celsius, and I understand that.)

  • I cannot say whether this is an error or not in this case, but the storage temp may very well be higher than the maximum junction temperature.

The maximum junction temperature does not specify the point at where the device is melting. It specifies the point of malfunction (or, to be exact, the point at which the device does still not malfunction)

In case of storage, there are no currents flowing and no electrical fields applied. So it doesn't matter if the breakthrough voltage drops below a safe level if the junction temperature raises too much. Since no current is flowing, there can no overcurent appear which would make the devices malfunction or even destroy it etc.

It is important, if the device has been stored at a higher temperature than the maximum junction temperature, it has to cool down before switching power on.

Also, the maximum junciton temperature is also usually exceeded when soldering the device. Here a maximum time is defined above which other physical effects may lead to long-term damage if the temperature is applied too long.

On the bottom line, none of these values is a fixed point. But they are usually selected so that the device won't fail during warranty time even if operated at these limits. :)
