MSP430FR2633: IAR or Code Compsoer

Part Number: MSP430FR2633

Hello,

I just received my captivate dev kit today and am wondering which IDE would be best to use, IAR or Code Composer. Any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dick Brooks

  • Hi Richard,

CapTIvate supports IAR Embedded Workbench for MSP430 equally as well as Code Composer Studio. The code generation capability supports both tool chains, and our example projects do as well. It's really up to you as far as which tool chain you prefer to work with. I will happily support any issues may you have using CapTIvate with either tool.

The way projects and work spaces are managed with each tool is a little bit different, so it's important to keep that in mind. In Code Composer Studio, when a new project or example project is imported it is copied into your CCS workspace and any edits you make apply to the copied files. In IAR, when you import a new or example project, IAR links to the files in-place and edits apply to the source files. You can set up Code Composer to link to files if needed, and you can copy out projects in IAR- but the default operation is as described above. Feel free to post any specific questions you may have.

    Regards,
    Walter
  • I have used CCS with no problems :) I do not know if IAR is requiring any kind of license depending on code size for msp430frX nowadays.
  • You may review the IAR licensing options here: www.iar.com/.../.
The kick starter version has an 8kB maximum code size restriction right now.

  • IAR is utilitarian - it just works, and is cross-platform, an important thing if you work on many MCUs.

    CCS is free.

If you write code carefully, they can be compiled on both systems with no/minor modifications.
  • Thanks Walter, and others. The 8k limitation in IAR cements my decision. I'll use CCS, without the limitation.

Thanks to all that responded. Much appreciated.
