MSP430F2418: Will MSP430 get damaged if pin 1.2 is pulled down to 2V?

Can you help address customer's question below:

I am investigating an issue with a component on one of our PCBs.

The component is connected to a micro pin that is set to output high but the attached component has failed and results in a load of 20 Ohms on the Pin.

Processor: MSP430F2418

Pin: P1.2

VCC: 3.2 Volts

Attached Component: Piezo Buzzer

The Pin is pulled down to 2 Volts as a result. The question is if the failed component is replaced what is the expected damage to the microcontroller pin.

I understand that the micro will not function properly while the load is present but will it damage it beyond functioning.

Hi Viktorija,

As long as the specifications in the Absolute Maximum Ratings and the Outputs (Ports P1 through P8) of the MSP430F2418 Datasheet are not violated, the device will not be damaged. More specifically, ensuring the voltage applied to the pin is within VCC +/- 0.3V and that the output current on the pin is less than 6mA.

If these specifications are violated, we cant guarantee device functionality. We also can't describe how the part will fail or the likelihood that it will fail because it varies significantly based on application.
