EVM430-F6736: IAR Embedded Workbench IDE crashes every time I open the emeter.eww IAR IDE Workspace (project)

Part Number: EVM430-F6736
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3220SF-LAUNCHXL

Namaste Support Executive,

We've recently purchased the MSP430-F6736 EVM Kit for E-metering. For software, I've downloaded the IAR Embedded Workbench v7.11 (Kickstarter 8k code limited). Details are as below.

When I double click and attempt to open the ..\slaa517e\slaa517\SLAA517\Source\emeter-ng\emeter.eww, I'm prompted for a conversion twice, to which I agree. However, the IAR Workbench crashes and prompts me to send the error dump before auto closing. Details are as below.

The ZIP of the Crash dump is additionally enclosed below.

83876ac0-84f5-4b5c-a683-6eb84b04b227.zip

My questions:

1. I'm unable to find the emeter-6736.epw project in the slaa517 folder. Everything is specific to 6733. Is the same code valid for evm6736 kit? The slaa517e PDF under Section 5.2.1 reads as below -

"The folder "emeter-ng" contains multiple project files. For this application, the emeter-6736.ewp project file is to be used. The folder "emeter-toolkit" has corresponding project file emeter-toolkit-6736.ewp. Choose only the projects that have the succeeding terms 6736 for this application. For first time use, it is recommended that both the projects be completely rebuild."

2. ‎How do I resolve this issue to open the emeter.eww workspace?

3. ‎How do I migrate the code to TI's Code Composite Studio? What is the recommended version of this IDE for building the existing sample code?

  • Hello Dipen,

Thanks for your detailed post. Regarding the IAR crash, it would be best to reach out to them directly, since they own this IDE. In one of the screenshots above, I do see that you may have emailed them already which is a good start.

In the meantime, can you try using an older IAR version to see if you can get around the crash? These designs used IAR v5.60 and v6.40, and unfortunately haven't been updated recently.

However, I am happy to inform you that we'll be releasing a new Energy Measurement Design Center and Software Library in early April. I will be sure to let you know when it's available on the web.

    Regards,

    James

  • Namaste James,

I've already sent this above query to the IAR Support Team. I received their auto-reply so I look forward towards their support on this issue.

I'd request your assistance to download the IAR v5.60 and IAR v6.40 installers. On the IAR website, I couldn't find an option to download earlier IDE versions.

Also, please share your valuable inputs on my 1st and 3rd questions posted above.

    Thanks | Regards,
    Dipen Shah
  • Hello,

These IAR versions can be downloaded from the following link:

    supp.iar.com/.../

After you install one or both of these versions, hopefully this resolves the IAR crash issue, and we can proceed to resolve your other issues. The project names may not match your part number. Please ignore this and check under the project properties whether the correct device is selected.

    Regards,

    James

  • Namaste James,

Thank you for the download link for downloading the earlier versions of the IAR Embedded Workbench.

As can be seen from the below image, "No personal login to IAR Systems My Pages is available for Evaluation and KickStart licenses."

Nevertheless, I attempted to register and received the below auto reply.

    ***** EMAIL RECEIVED :: START *****

Thank you for trying to register a MyPages account at www.iar.com.

Unfortunately, your registration failed. Please see the reasons below.

Note: MyPages is available for users with registered licenses, using the same email address that was used to register the license. Personal login at My Pages is not available for time-limited evaluation licenses or size-limited kickstart licenses.

Please contact customercare.se@iar.com if the problem persists, or if you need to create an account with another email address.

    Best regards,

Looks like I have no alternative but to purchase a license. Any alternatives?

  • Namaste James/ TI Support Executive,

The IAR Support representative has reverted with their suggestion to purchase a license for downloading and using the IAR v5.60 and/ or IAR v6.40 older versions, compatible with the EVM430-F6736 kit. This is indeed unfortunate for us since nowhere on TI's EVM430-F6736 webpages, is there a mention about an additional software license purchase requirement. The purchased EVM430-F6736 kit has already costed us $400 including Customs Import Duty charges.

We have purchased TI's product (EVM430-F6736 kit) for our E-metering application and hence request TI's assistance for moving forward on the software front. TI's CCS IDE is a mature development platform and, we find it very surprising for EVM430-F6736 kit's missing support with CCS IDE.

The EVM430-F6736 kit will be interfaced with the CC3220SF-LAUNCHXL launchpad board and, which has also been purchased by us from TI. However, because we are unable to use the EVM430-F6736 kit due to licensing issues, we are unable to proceed further.

We sincerely request your assistance to move forward. Finally, please share any recommendations for integrating the EVM430-F6736 kit with the CC3220SF-LAUNCHXL launchpad board.

    Thanks | Regards,

  • Namaste James,

    Thank you for this update.

I've tried my hands on TI's new release for the new Energy Measurement Design Center and Software Library. Happy to know that CCS IDE now supports the E-metering EVMs for development.

For now, I need to get myself familiarized with this new development environment. I shall revert as and when required.
