MSP432P401R: BSL Scripter RESET pulse

Part Number: MSP432P401R
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET

Hi,

Is there a way for the BSL scripter to send a reset pulse to the MSP432 device?

Thanks,

Jeffrey

  •  Jeffrey,

       You can use the REBOOT_RESET command.   .

    //
    //Script example MSP432 UART BSL
    //Device : MSP432P401R
    //Comm Bridge: XDS110 - MSP432LP BackChannelUART
    // for this setting, the parity need to be
    //   set from Scripter side
    // When MSP-BSL Rocket is used, parity will be
    //   generated by the Rocket
    //
    //Download blink application to
    //MSP432 device through UART BSL
    //
    LOG
    MODE P4xx UART 9600 COM25 PARITY
    RX_PASSWORD_32 .\pass256_wrong.txt
    RX_PASSWORD_32 .\pass256_default.txt
    MASS_ERASE
    RX_DATA_BLOCK_32 Blink_LED.txt
    //RX_DATA_BLOCK_32 Blink_LED.hex
    TX_BSL_VERSION_32
    TX_DATA_BLOCK_32 0x0000 0x4000 ReadBlock_MSP432P401R.txt
    //TX_DATA_BLOCK_32 0x0000 0x4000 ReadBlock_MSP432P401R.hex
    REBOOT_RESET

    regards,

    Chris

  • Hi Chris,
    The REBOOT_RESET command is not outputting a reset pulse at the RST pin. I have tried this using an XDS1100 and MSP-FET. Also, the REBOOT_RESET command is not allowed before the MODE command. I need to send the reset pulse before initializing the BSL communication. Is there any other way to do this using BSL-Scripter?
    Thanks,
    Jeffrey
  • It appears that for the P401R Scripter does not initiate the BSL process using the special pattern on /Reset and Test.  But I wonder if you could get it to generate a reset if a Mode command pretends that it's some other part that does use that pattern.  Of course it would fail, but maybe you could follow up the invalid Mode command with a valid one.  Might have to run Scripter twice though.  Well I'm just guessing.  The problem is that Scripter doesn't do a reset directly.  It instructs the MSP-FET to do that.  I just don't know how to make that happen.  By the way, you should probably click on the "did not solve my problem" button if you want TI to stay involved.

  • Jeffrey, George,

       It is important to remember that the scripter does not invoke the BSL but communicates with the BSL once invoked.  The REBOOT_RESET command simply resets the device as described in the source code:

    /**
     * Triggers a REBOOT_RESET that causes the device to re-initialize ifself and causes bootcode to execute again.
     *
     * \return None
     */
    void BSL432_API_rebootReset()
    {
    #if defined (__MSP432P401R__) || defined (__MSP432P401M__)
        MAP_SysCtl_rebootDevice();
    #elif defined (__MSP432P4111__) || defined (__MSP432P411V__) || defined (__MSP432P411Y__)
        MAP_SysCtl_A_rebootDevice();
    #else
    #error Device not defined.
    #endif
    }

    Regards,

    Chris

  • But I think Jeffrey's point is that REBOOT_RESET is a command sent to the P401R to reboot itself, and can take place only after communications have been established.  Perhaps I misinterpreted his question, but it appeared to me that he wanted to transmit a low pulse to the chip's /Reset pin before attempting to communicate at all, and wanted Scripter to make that happen.

  • Hi Chris,
    Is there any other way to programmatically control the RST output pin of an XDS1100 or MSP-FET?
    Thanks,
    Jeffrey
  • Jeffrey,
    I do not believe so. At least with the traditional tools. I will reach out to the XDS team and see if there are any drivers available that you could take advantage of.

    Chris
  • Jeffrey,
    I confirmed that this is not available. I am working with the tool developer to add this into future tools, but unfortunately this will not resolve any immediate need/request.

    Regards,
    Chris
