MSP430F5529: MSP430: Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found

Part Number: MSP430F5529
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430F5529LP, ENERGIA, MSP430WARE, MSP-EXP430FR5994, , UNIFLASH, MSP-FET

Upon connection MSP430 shows as drive F no verification occurs.
The only file that shows is the Read me file which mentions a Demo Applications which does not show.
From Users Guide  [Page 6]  I should see
Button1.txt  Button2.txt MSP430 USB LaunchPad.url
I only see README.txt
System setting shows  MSC and HID devices, but the device could not be contacted.
Using  Energia: 1.6.10E18 (Windows 10), Board: "MSP-EXP430F5529LP" I attempted to run a program.
After a series of diagnostic messages the botton line was
error: MSP430: Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found

I suspect that the software was not properly loaded.

  • Hi,

Can you check if power supply is fine? The error "No USB FET found" sometimes is due to insufficient power supply (also check the jumpers on your Launchpad to see if they positioned are correctly).
With regards to the Demo: you could try programming the device with the Out Of Box Experience ( this is for example provided in the Resource Exlorer in Code Composes Studio or in MSP430Ware) to see if you then see the files you'd expect to see.
Let me know the outcome of those indications.

    Thanks and best regards,
    Britta
  • Hi Britta,
My MSP-EXP430FR5994 lights up when attached to the laptop and the Readme file shows up.
Attempting to follow your advice I took the following steps -- Went to
www.ti.com/.../ccstudio-msp TI’s Eclipse-based Code Composer Studio (CCS) Resource Exlorer in Code Composes Studio
    dev.ti.com/.../
    Users guide suggested CCS Cloud
    Went to
    processors.wiki.ti.com/.../TI_Cloud_Agent followed instructions
    Outcome or rather No outcome
extensions found for "TICloudAgent Bridge on Firefox not found
extensions for Chrome No search results found for TICloudAgent Bridge
My system settings shows MSP driver and MSC & HID Example (I do not know what to do with this)
    Using Energia this is the error report;
    Energia: 1.6.10E18 (Windows 10), Board: "MSP-EXP430F5529LP"

Sketch uses 1,206 bytes (2%) of program storage space. Maximum is 48,128 bytes.
Global variables use 18 bytes (0%) of dynamic memory, leaving 8,174 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 8,192 bytes.
    DSLite version 7.4.0.1099
Configuring Debugger (may take a few minutes on first launch)...
    Initializing Register Database...
    Initializing: MSP430
error: MSP430: Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found
Failed: MSP430: Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found

    the selected serial port
does not exist or your board is not connected
    SO I still need help.

  • Hi,

could you quickly specify which of the two devices you want to use that causes the problem: MSP-EXP430F5529LP or MSP-EXP430FR5994?
Also, can you verify that the power supply and jumper settings of the launchpad is correct?
Does the device show up in your Device Manager?

    Thanks again and best regards,
    Britta
  • Hi Britta,
The device that has the problem: MSP-EXP430F5529LP
HID shows up in my Device Manager. I get This device is working properly. Should the MSP show?
The MSP green light shows up upon connection to the laptop. I do use the USB to power other devices.
Have you looked at the details of my July 13 information?

Looking forward to hearing from you,
    Meyer Katzper
  • Hi,

so you LaunchPad shows up as HID in the device manager and not a virtual com port, right?

When saying "I get this device is working properly" does this mean you do not receive the error message "USB FET not found" anymore? Or just that you can access the HID?

I've looked through the details from July 13, please try the https://dev.ti.com and see if you can access and maybe even update the FET that way.

Also, are you able to try on a different PC? Maybe some of the drivers needed for the FET aren't in place.

    Best regards,

    Britta

  • Britta,

This is what I told the Mouser vendor

    I have purchases an USB-enabled MSP430F5529 16-bit MCU
    However, I cannot use it.
MSP430 shows as drive F no verification occurs.
The only file that shows is the Read me file which mentions a Demo Applications which does not show.
From Users Guide  [Page 6]  I should see
    Button1.txt  Button2.txt MSP430 USB LaunchPad.url
    I only see README.txt
I tried attaching it to another computer with the same results.
I went on to load launchpad  from Energia open-source platform which is used in the Electronics for Artists book
I cannot access serial ports via usb connector
In using Launch  programs I got
error: MSP430: Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found
Failed: MSP430: Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found
the selected serial port does not exist or your board is not connected
I checked my com3 and com4 ports and the are OK.
Please send me a replacement for this defective MSP430F5529

I have attempted to follow your suggestions without success. Is my MSP430F5529 defective or is there a technical fix that can be simply implemented?

    Meyer Katzper

  • Britta,
By the way, the Mouser vendors said it was a technical problem and referred me to TI.

  • Hi,

I'd like to rule out a Hardware issue here, so could you please try UniFlash to Flash the device.

In case it doesn't work please make a screenshot of the error message and post it here.

Besides, can you also post a screenshot of the device manager so that I can see how the COM ports and also the USB show up in your system.

Could you also take a photo of your board showing the jumper settings on your launchpad?

In case you have the required hardware, could you try testing the supply voltage on the board? Not only on emulator side but also on the board side containing the MSP430.

This information will help to further troubleshoot where the problem lies.

Thanks for your patience and waiting on your reply.

    Best regards,

    Britta

  • As requested the pictures of the MSP-EXP430F5529LP attached to my laptop are shown at for you to view.   Meyer

  • I activated uniflash as you suggested. I got
on July 20 No debug probes/devices detected Continued to select MSP-EXP430F5529LP Asked for image file. Gave the readme file of my got MSP-EXP430F5529LP {as I had no other} Got
    TI MSP430 USB1/MSP430
Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found
So - I cannot communicate with my purchased MSP-EXP430F5529LP even if I had the correct image file.
    What now?
  • Hi Meyer,

I've taken this back to our tools experts to see what your issue might be and more important if this is something to still solve (or if you'd need a MSP-FET replacement).
I'll come back to you in the next days when I've got feedback from the experts.
I really appreciate your patience on this one.

    Best regards,
    Britta
  • Hi Meyer,

for the launchpad to function correctly, the MSP Debug Interface should be visible in the Device Manager.

From our conversation I understood this is not the case, correct?

If I misunderstood before and it shows up, please let me know so that I can guide you from there.

In case this doesn't show up, I advise you to get in contact with your supplier to swap your launchpad for a new, working one.

    Best regards,

    Britta

  • Britta,

Your information is correct. I double checked now. MSP does not appear in the ports.

On Opening the computer today it gave a message  USB device malfunctioned and PC does not recognize it.
Going to System  System USB bus controllers -Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed).

The supplier (Mouser) did  swap my launchpad for a new equally defective one. Upon complaining they referred me to you. My feeling is that they got a defective batch.

Possibly you might supply me with a new Working Launchpad. I will inform the supplier that they may have gotten a defective batch.

    Meyer

  • Hi,

did you report that your new launchpad is also not working.

Normally, Mouser needs to get in contact with us to solve this, as I cannot directly swap your defective launchpad. Please reportn the second malfunctioning launchpad for them and let them get in contact with us.

You might also try our FAQ on returns ans refunds as I unfortunately can only help with technical questions not with purchase of actual hardware.

I hope you'll receive a new, working LP soon.

    Best regards,

    Britta

  • Hi,

as I didn't hear back from you in a while I assume that your issue has been solved.
Please go ahead and verify the given answer to also help other users that might run into the same issue.

Note that I'll go ahead and close this thread in the next couple of days if I don't hear back from you. Replying to the thread will re-open it if necessary at some point.

    Best regards,
    Britta
  • My new launchpad is working. However, the introductory instructions remain incorrect. I eventually found correct guidance. I cannot say that your advice helped to resolve my issue. I suggest that the erroneous introductory guidance be corrected. At this point you may close my (not really resolved) file.
  • I'm sorry to hear that.
Still could you quickly recap what "introductory instructions" need to be corrected? I've fed back that there might be issues with the pre-loaded firmware already, unfortunately we didn't verify it yet as a general problem.
What else did you see as "erroneous introductory guidance"? I'd be glad to feed this also back to the organization.

    Thanks and best regards,
    Britta
  • The insert has "Let's get started!"  Also online at www.ti.com/.../slau536.pdf

Step 2 is "The Demo Applications"

    Only ReadMe.txt appears. Nothing else.

To put it mildly, this is misleading and casts doubt on any further "help".

    Meyer Katzper

  • I have wasted much time due to misdirection.
  • Thanks for the feedback.
We're digging into the cause of this issue (and I understand this won't help you any further but it might help others though) so I really appreciate you've reported this.

    Best regards,
    Britta
