MSP432P401R: How much current can GPIO pin source??

Hello everyone,

       I want to drive common cathod 7 segment display using MSP432P401R controller. Current required to drive individual 7 segment display is 20 mA and display is drive using port pin of msp432.In datasheet on MSP432P401 it's specified, that 4 outputs can drive current up to 20 mA. But I didn't found any infomation about specific pins. So, I just want to know how much current can a GPIO pin of msp432 source??

       Can we drive display directly from  gpio pin of msp432. is there any need of driver/ mosfet at the output of gpio pins??? 

  • Table 5-24 and 5-25 of the MSP432P401 Datasheet shows max output drive of 2mA and 10mA for normal- and high-drive IOs, respectively, at Vcc=3V. If you can tolerate higher voltage drop, then these numbes can go up to 6mA and 20mA, respectively.  

    Table 4-2 (Signal Descriptions) indicates which IOs are high-drive. (P2.0/ 2.1/ 2.2/ 2.3)

    It is important to pay attention to the notes at the bottom of these two tables, which give maximum overall current for all outputs. For the higher voltage drop, the latest datasheet (SLAS826G-March 2015) shows a max of 100mA.  Note that you must include ALL GPIO loads, not just your display outputs. If you exceed this value, then you'll need some kind of driver. Also, you may want to try this out and see if you get sufficient brightness with direct drive vs. P/NFET.
