CCS/MSP430FR5969: DCO vs MODOSC

Dear colleagues,

I have a doubt about the clocks named DCO and MODOSC. I understand that both are internal clocks of high frequency (units of MHz).

However, I do not know when I should use one or the other, or in other words: which are their pros and cons.

The examples that I've found about the ADC12 generally employ the MODOSC, but it is not clear for me why.

By the way, are these clocks implemented by RC oscillators?

  • Both are RC oscillators, which means they are low power but not very accurate.

    The MODOSC is used as a safe fallback clock, i.e., as a clock that is always available, with a nominally fixed frequency.
    The DCO is configurable, so it would not be as safe as a fallback.

    The existence of the MODOSC is mostly for compatibility with other MSP families, where the DCO can by synchronzed to an external clock, which could fail. Furthermore, on those families, the modulator would introduce jitter in the DCO clock signal, which would make it less suitable for the ADC.

    On the FR5969, just use whatever clock has a suitable frequency.
