MSP430F5510: Multiple issues

Part Number: MSP430F5510

Hi,

I am using a few MSP430F5510IRGZT MCUs which were bought in 2015 and stored and kept in the same electrostatic sensitive bag (in which they arrived at our premises). The tapped bag was kept in the component rack placed in our store at room temperature.

Some of the microcontrollers work normally but most of them are giving one or the other issue. Following are list of issues observed with multiple ICs.

-> Internal voltage regulator of the IC giving random output between 2.7 V to 4.2 V instead of stable 3.3 V.

-> Some I/Os do not function when configured as o/p.

-> Verification issues of program memory during programming using MSP-FET430 UIF.

Kindly advise,

Regards

  • Hello Atul,

How are you testing these devices? Are you using a target socket board? If not, are you ensuring that all the proper capacitors and other required external components mentioned in the datasheet are connected? For example, many of our parts require an external capacitor on the VCORE pin to operate correctly. If the supply voltage is having issues, then the memory verification failures don't surprise me.

  • Hi James,

Thanks for your quick response. I am testing the micro-controllers by soldering them on the final product PCB. And as suggested, I have connected a 2.2uF capacitor to VCORE pin (pin no. 13) of the device.

Please check attached schematic for your reference.

  • Thanks for sharing the schematic. Unfortunately, a 2.2uF capacitor is not what we recommend on VREF. I suspect this is contributing to your issues but isn't the only thing wrong. Have you read through our datasheet to understand what capacitor values are recommended for various pins? A good reference would be the schematic from our MSP-TS430RGC64USB target board for the MSP430F5510 (found in Figure B-54 in the MSP430 Hardware Tools User's Guide). Not only is it a good reference, it would be the best way to test your devices (assuming your device's package is supported by the socket board), since the proper passives and connections for power and JTAG are implemented on the board.

    Regards,

    James
