MSP430F6638: Firmware Upgrade with USB Stick?

Hello All,

I am working on a design using MSP430F6638. I need a way to upgrade the firmware once the board is enclosed. The board will be powered by an external power supply, not VBUS. Is it possible to update the firmware by plugging a thumb drive into a USB type A connector on the board? I.e., can the MSP430 be booted into BSL and then read the new firmware from the USB thumb drive?

I'm happy to provide more information in order to clarify. Thanks in advance for the help.

The USB protocol make a strict distinction between USB devices and USB hosts, and allows communication only between each other.

The MSP430 USB module implements only USB device, and thumb drives also are devices. You can connect the MSP only to a USB host, i.e., a PC.

I second Clemens' comment above.

In case updating the device firmware via host (such as PC) is an option for you, You could have a look at the USB Field Firmware Updates on MSP430 MCUs Application Report as it gives a good overview on how such a project could look like.
