MSP430I2041: Noise of Shared Reference

Part Number: MSP430I2041
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5528

Hello,

is there any noise data available for the REF module used for the SD24 ADC in the MSP430? I am particularly interested in spectral components between 1 and 10 Hz.

Best regards

Jan

  • Hello Jan,

All specifications for this part are in the datasheet. Please see section 5.7.6 for the Reference module and section 5.7.7 for SD24 with internal reference. We do not have further data available beyond these specifications.
  • Thank you, Jace. It looks like the reference module was not desined particularly with regard to lowest noise. May be for the intended application in electricity meters this is no problem. I will have to connect an external reference since I want to measure frequencies from 1 Hz up with an integrator which emphasizes low frequency noise. I remember the same issue with an MSP430F5528 design.

In another thread I read this answer "On the bottom line, the MSP internal ADCs are not to be compared with external high-precision ADCs which cost more than the whole MSP. If I need high-precision results, then I'd go for dedicated external components. 14 bits (= 0.025%) is quite a good result for internal components (even though the name 'SD24' promises more). Especially if the reference has a much higher error.". May be I expected too much.

    Regards

    Jan
