MSP430F5510: BSL via USB : SLAA452C

Part Number: MSP430F5510

In the application note SLAA452C is written, at page 3

"MSP430 firmware upgrade over USB is implemented using the on-chip bootstrap loader (BSL) program.  The BSL is located in a dedicated section of flash, outside of main program flash.  TI has always provided a BSL on nearly every MSP430 device derivative, pre-programmed in the factory; but unlike other devices, the BSL on USB-equipped MSP430s uses USB as the hardware interface"

Does it mean that the I must not program anything on MSP430 flash before of the firmware upgrade ?

The microprocessor MSP430 delivers by TI contains already a BSL program in flash ?

  • Hi,

that is correct the MSP430F5510 devices come with USB BSL preprogrammed. Please check chapter 6.5.1 of the data sheet.

  • Hello Andre,

Thank you for the prompt and detailed response.

My customer and I would also like to understand whether a new version of Code Composer Studio for 64-bit architecture will be released or not for the MSP430Fxxx product implementation. If so, when it will be released? Will it be fully available for customer?

@ADAMO TIZZONI, may be you can comment here if you have additional inquiries and background for this request.

    Many Thanks to All,

    Antonio

  • On TI-wiki, about Code Composer I have read this one ..

Move to Windows 64bit in 2019 Our current plan is to migrate CCS to be a 64bit application on Windows in 2019. This will mean that it will not work on 32bit Windows systems. People with 32bit Windows Systems would need to stick with CCSv8 or earlier.

Could you clarify if it will be available on the firsts months of next year or I must wait more time ?
  • Hi,

just for future questions, please post them in separate threads by using "Ask a related question" or "Ask a new question". That helps to keep the forum clean and increases finding answers for other users.

I contacted our internal software team. CCS is a 64bit application on Linux and MacOS today. With the introduction of CCSv9.0 in 1Q19 this will also be the case on Windows. When that happens only 64bit Windows will be supported and not 32bit Windows.

    Hope that helps.

    Best regards,
    Andre
  • Thank you
