MSP432P4111: Default BSL entry

Hi all.

Looking at the documentation, I cannot find what is the default way to activate the UART BSL for MSP432P4111.

I'd like to know a way that works no matter the part is blank/erased or it was already flashed, without having to resort to boot override mechanism.

Datasheet states that P1.2 is BSLRXD and P1.3 is BSLTXD; but what is the pin to drive - and if it should be driven high or low - in order to entry the BSL anyway?

Furthermore, I'd like to know if such activation pin is sampled just right after reset release: if so, I could then configure an eUSCI UART over that same P1.2 and P1.3 in order to provide a wired interface to my application when BSL entry isn't forced by means of that pin.

The best reference for this is the MSP432P4xx SimpleLink™ Microcontrollers Bootloader User's Guide. Section 3.3 covers BSL invocation from different sources. By default, when you have a blank device, the boot code will detect this and immediately transfer to the BSL, which will then scan the various interfaces looking for a device to boot from (UART, I2C ,etc). Once programmed, you must program the boot override mailbox (per section 3.3.2) to define the port/pin to use in invocating BSL as well as details of the interface to use.

Ok Bob, thank you very much for your prompt answer.

The issue I see anyway is the following: it does not exist a simple and always working way to activate the BSL (like e.g. does exist for most MSP430 parts using TEST/RESET# pins), since the boot override feature requires another mean to write the flash (i.e. JTAG/SWD) when BSL isn't started.

PS- If you look at the BSL Invocation section of the Bootloader users's guide mentioned above (SLAU622)., the hardware entry sequence is very similar (section 3.3.2 , Figure 1,2):
MSP432- P1.0 LH before ResetnLH (other GPIOs can be configured also)
MSP430- TEST LH (twice) before RSTn LH

Sure, I read that. But it requires suitable configuration (mailbox command, BSL_PARAMS) as reported in points 1, 2 and 3 before that figure.

Here I'm asking if such an hardware BSL activation is always enabled for blank/erased parts (what are default values of BSL_PARAMS?).

I found the answer to your questions in the MSP432 Technical reference manual Section 5.8.7, item d:

d. Hardware invocation of BSL is not supported by default but can be enabled using the boot-override
mailbox.
