CCS/MSP430F2122: Wrong Identifying On CCS and debugger problems

Part Number: MSP430F2122

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

CANNOT PROGRAM/ OR USE JTAG (MSP-FET430IF) TO  MONITOR 2122 DEVICE.

I've just gone through a difficult and frustrating time. I designed a board for the 2122 device, then placed the chip on the board, (nothing else) and tried to program it using my FET430UIF.  "nothing".....

cannot recognize, or "device not supported" error message.

ATTEMPTED SOLUTION/ VERIFICATION OF PROBLEM.

1) I went to a previously successful board  using a 2234 device which I've been able to program and monitor.... ALL GOOD.

So, clearly the UIF if working fine. (It has the latest firmware)

2) Double Triple checked all my connections.. "are they right?"... "are they all there?"  ... yes and yes.

COMMUNITY... so I began to haunt the various forums and found many others are having the same problem....

A proposed solution was suggested  'buy the TI target board and program the chips on that'....errr.. which does absolutely *nothing* for the ability to 'monitor/step/breakpoint' etc using the JTAG! in my product.

SO... is there a fundamental problem with the  2122 DEVICES?  (in regard to JTAG programming monitoring?)

HELP HELP HELP....  I'd prefer some direct help /dialogue with my email on this, because I have an aggressive cancer and need to sort out some important things for my business before I leave this world. "Putting my affairs in order" you might say.

Cheers

  • Hello Julian,

If the MSP430F2122 isn't damaged, the recommended connections and capacitors mentioned in the datasheet are used, the recommended JTAG circuitry has been implemented, and the JTAG connections are made correctly, then you should be able to program the device. It's good to hear that you've verified that the MSP-FET430UIF can program other devices, so that's not the issue.

Can you share a screenshot of your schematic? Is your supply voltage above 2.2V (minimum voltage required for programming)?

    Regards,

    James
  • Thanks for your response James.

    Here is my schematic.

    VCC was fine, 3.3v

Please note though, there are reports in the forums of people having my same experience.  They only 'resolved' it by getting a TI target board in order to program the chip..(but that does not facilitate debugging using breakpoints).   My existing 2234 board (different product) has a 47k + .01uf reset  circuit and has no drama being programmed and debugged with my 430UIF.  Today I'm going to try a 47K + 1nf (.001) in my new board for the 2122.
    cheers

  • RESOLVED! Amazing. I found the problem. It was the lack of a PULLUP on my reset line on my target board. I was under the wrong impression that the FET40UIF provided a 'reset pulse' when it began it's download. ... seems, if anything to be an open collector pulldown approach which would explain why my lack of pullUP resistor caused it to fail.
Thankyou to all who attempted to help me in this.
    Regards
    Julian
