MSP430FR5964: Design considerations

Planning on using the MSP430FR5964 for a new design we’re working on, and I have a few questions:

1 – Any special design considerations when using the Internal low-power oscillator (MODCLK)? I believe this will limit our uC to a Max freq

Of 8 MHz, but are there any other limitations like external interface speeds on UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO, etc?

2 – In our design we will be powering down the uC completely in order to reduce power compulsion to an absolute minimum, so I was

Wondering how long it might take for the uC to be operational in a typical setup?

3 – I’ve ordered the MSP-EXP430FR5994 Launchpad Dev Kit, seemed like the closest match to the MSP430FR5964 we’re planning on using. Is

There some kind of universal breadboard that included the Debugger Emulation that we could mount our part onto? Like some of the older

Launchpad Kits that had a socket for mounting your uC.

    MODOSC sources MODCLK. This is typically a 5MHz. This can be seen in table 5-8 of the datasheet. Take note of the temperature and voltage supply drift also shown in table 5-8.

    See table 5-9 in the datasheet. Power up to active mode is typically 500uS with max of 1ms.

    The launchpads are certainly fine for evaluating the family of devices. We do also offer a socketed target board for the 80 pin device. You will also need the MSP-FET to program and debug the device.
