MSP430FR6989: LCD character #5 not working

Part Number: MSP430FR6989

Hello,

I was given a board by a TI employee to work with and upon running the startup demo I noticed that the 5th character has three segments not working. When I attempt to have it output an "8" I get a reverse "C" instead. This means the left vertical segments as well as the middle horizontal segment are not working. Is there anything that could cause this besides a LCD failure, broken resistor or other intermediary IC that could be changed.

Thanks

Kas

  • Upon further investigation and working through the schematic and data sheets there is 1.5V available on PIN17 of the LCD. This means that the board is working as it should be built the LCD is not. Closer inspection of the LCD reveals a manufacturing defect in the placement of PIN17. it is skewed towards Pin16 implying that it was not correctly placed during manufacture and possibly resulting in no internal connections between the pin and the LCD being made.

Is there something TI would do to solve this issue.

  • Hello Kas,
this sounds like a quality issue of the board you have obtained. We apologize for this inconvenience. Could you please let us know the name of the EVM? Then we can check on the possibilities for replacement. Many thanks in advance.

  • This is the board I am referring too

Here you can see pin P10.1 has odd spacing between its surrounding pins.

This is the box with all the specific information.

  • Hi Kas,
many thanks. This is our FR6989 LaunchPad. I see the issue with the LCD. This is definitely a production issue of the LCD. I'll check what we can do about it and come back to you.

    Best regards
