MSP430FR2522: [hardware design]Self-capacitive touch button structure problem

Part Number: MSP430FR2522

Dear champion,

for these two structural methods, which is better from the perspective of stability? My customer wants to use self-capacitive mode.
1. PCB+2.4mm backlight + 1.5mm tempered glass
2. PCB with LED + spring + 1.5mm tempered glass (LED in the middle of the spring)

Best Regards,

Emma

  • Hello Emma,
if I understand the description of the two options correctly, then in the 1st case the LED backlight would be positioned between the PCB/electrode and the touch overlay consisting of 1.5mm tempered glass, while in the 2nd case the electrode would be the spring bridging the distance between the PCB and the touch overlay.
If my understanding is correct, then definitely the 2nd case is the better one. The spring brings the E-Field closer to the touch overlay and increases the distance of the electrode and its charge from GND on the PCB. Due to this a better electrode response is to be expected.

    Best regards
    Peter
