MSP430FR5969: -40C Storage Temperature?

The MSP430FR5969 datasheet states a minimum storage temperature of -40C.

Is this true?

Most components with operating temperature of -40C have a storage temperature of -55C or -65C.

If it's true, what is the reason?

Craig,

I see that the specification on the MSP430 FRAM devices is -40C. MSP430 devices which uses Flash are specified to -55C. My assumption is that we just did not test these devices lower than -40C, therefore specified them at -40C. Are you planning to store the devices below -40C?

Eddie,

Yes, we are planning to expose the device below -40C unpowered for short duration (minutes to hours) until the temperature increases into the operating temperature range.

The device is specified at -40C, so we cannot guarantee that damage will not occur below this point. You could still use the device if you test these conditions and are comfortable with the results, but as this is outside of spec, no guarantees.
