MSP430FR2311: MSP430FR2311 IR Reflection-Sensing Subsystem

Part Number: MSP430FR2311
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2650, CC2652R, MSP430FR2355

Hello TIs

I would like to request, if anyone has the battery life calculation for this reference design?
I am trying to develop a smoke detector using this reference design.

I am thinking to change the battery to Lithium 9V. Is it good? More capacity? Last longer?

And also, if I would like to implement Bluetooth and Zigbee functionality into my system.
Should I continue to use the same reference design with additional external components for BT and ZB

or is there better MCU that has both functions integrated in it.

Hope to hear your replies and help soon!

Thank you.

Regards

Daniel

  • Hi Daniel,

The reference design uses 3V battery CR123 to directly power the FR2311 and total board average current under specific condition is about 2.6uA, so we usually calculate the life time with dividing its capacitor by the average current. Of course, your dedicated application configuration will impact the average current.

If you switch to 9V Lithium battery, then one additional power regulator will be needed to generate matched power supply(~3V) for FR2311; the discharge voltage multiplied the mAh will contribute to the total capacity, so in theory this Lithium battery has more capacity and will last longer. But please confirm whether you truly need use this battery model and change the circuit structure accordingly.

FR2311 is designed for smoke detect application with SAC module integrated while keeping low cost, there is no other MCU combined with these characters, so it's suggested to use additional wireless components to implement your BT and ZB functionality.

  • Hi Collins

    Thanks for your reply.
I'll try to figure out the calculations.

For the additional wireless components to implement BT and ZB.
Do you have any recommendations and how to integrate? Now I only thought of CC2650/CC2652.

If eg, CC2652R. How can I connect FR2311 to CC2652 using UART? As FR2311 is using UART port for the TIA function.
Or do you also have any recommendation for its conenctions?

    Thanks
    Daniel
  • Hi Daniel,

CC2xxx family is the right choice for your BT and ZB implementation.
About the integration connection between smoke detect module and the wireless part, you can use the I2C interface to connect FR2311 and CC2xxx; if you prefer to use UART and there is no tough BOM requirement to your design, you can consider MSP430FR2355 to replace FR2311 in your smoke detect module, it's targeted at high-end smoke detect application and has adequate communication resource.
  • Hi Collins

    Thank you for the information.

Does TI have any additional reference designs/software for IR Reflection-Sensing Subsystem.
Where we use FR2311PW20 instead of PW16?

As PW16 has limited GPIOs, and we also want to connect to CC2xxx family as your recommendation.
Will there be any issue in upgrading from PW16 to PW20? Will firmware be affected by this?

I remember that FR2311 is the only MCU which supports integrated TIA and ADC.
So I may not be able to use FR2355 if we were to follow the reference exactly.

Is there any support for this? Also, does TI have any development kit for this reference design where we can test FR2311 chip and firmware?

    Thanks
    Daniel

  • Hi Daniel,

You can directly migrate the PW16 code to PW20 device for FR2311 without change.

FR2355 integrates powerful analog signal chain, so you can use it for our high-end smoke detect application, here (http://www.ti.com/lit/wp/slaa835b/slaa835b.pdf) is one guide you can refer to.

  • Hi Collins

Thank you for providing your time and knowledge.

    Cheers

    Daniel
