MSP430FR5964: How to release SBW interface from running code

Part Number: MSP430FR5964
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET

Hello,

After programming the processor by MSP430Flasher through SBW interface I noticed, that device consume few hundred microamps of current. This current flow constantly also if I disconnect MSP-FET from device. Program runs normally. I suspect that SBW interface is not properly released and causes such increased power consumption. Is it possible to disable/release SBW interface without reconnecting MSP-FET again nor powering off device?

I was try to do the "software BOR" reset, but it didn't help (PMM_trigBOR from msp library).I also tried to disable JTAG by writing 5555 into jtag_signature and then reseting device, but this idea also failed.

Any help?

Best regards,

Mateusz

  • Hello Mateusz,
I would recommend using a professional debugging tool instead of an alternative tool designed just for code download, what MSP430Flasher in reality is.
Our Code Composer Studio is a full blown professional code generation and debug tool coming for free. It supports all the required features, which you spoke about, including the free run of the MSP430 device.
The JTAG logic needs to be shut down, to be able to see the real current consumption as in the final application.
Power cycling will also do the job, and should be used to verify, whether the measured current is really the non-debug current. If you sense here a difference to operation with a connected debugger, it could be also due to some floating nodes, means not properly initialized GPIOs.

  • Hello Peter,

thank you for your response. I am currently using MSPflasher only for download code into the device on production. The problem is, that SBW is active after disconnecting MSPFlasher and increase power consumption. Power cycle isn't possible because my device have soldered battery into the PCB. Is any option to shut down SBW from device program (without re-attaching MSP-FET into the device)?
I checked device current consumption after power cycle and it is correct.
  • Hello Mateusz,
thank you for the additional information. From my perspective it has to be possible, as that's what CCS is doing. I am sure our professional Programmer, the Gang Programmer is also able to do this.
One would need to apply the JTAG/Spy-Bi-Wire commands like the tool does to shut down the debug connection and logic. I'll try to get this information and come back to you as soon as possible.

    Best regards

  • I understand, but the question is if it can be done by device itself, ex. by setting value in register or by reset etc. Without any external equipment nor device power cycle . I read in MSP documentation that BOR should be enough, but this solution didn't work.
  • Hi Mateusz,
unfortunately I don't have a positive answer for you on that one. It is unfortunately not possible to shut down the JTAG from the CPU side.
So the question is, how you would like to continue on this. Would it be an option for you, to use another programming tool, which would ensure the JTAG shut down after programming the device? (I'll be out office until end of this week, in case you need urgently a solution on this, please open another thread and point to this one. Many thanks in advance)

    Best regards
    Peter
  • Thank you for your help. In my case it is easier to do power cycle than use again any external tool. Thanks a lot again.

    Best regards
