MSP430FR5968: DCO circuit configuration and operation principle

I searched around to see what publicly available documentation on the MSP430 DCO and found the following:

Multi-Frequency Range and Tunable DCO on MSP432P4xx Microcontrollers

Other than what's presented in the users guide the only other thing I can suggest taking a look at the MSP430Fx5xx_x6xx family users' guide.  The concepts in that clock system chapter might be helpful.
