Hi,

I'm using the MSP430F5522 in a new product design. On page 21 of the datasheet for the MSP430F552X, there is a statement about the UART BSL:

A UART BSL is also available that can be programmed by the user into the BSL memory by replacing the pre-programmed, factory supplied, USB BSL.

In SLAU319A, "MSP430 Programming Via the Bootstrap Loader" there is the following statement in section 5.1 for the MSP430F552x family:

BSL in device is RAM write only. Full BSL must first be loaded into device RAM and started to perform flash write.

I've looked and I can't find the "full BSL" for the UART BSL communications. I'm not using USB with this chip, so that's not an option. I'm looking to download new firmwareinto this chip from another processor (not a PC).

Hi,

A couple clarifications:

- To make the USB BSL, We basically took the existing UART BSL, removed the UART communication code, and added a USB stack. However, the USB stack is significantly larger than the UART communication code. For this reason, the USB BSL engine had to be stripped down to the bare essentials: RAM write, erase, and security. Using this core, it is possible to load a full version into RAM, which can perform all BSL operations. Since the UART communication code is small enough, this restriction was not placed on the UART BSLs.... meaning all UART BSLs which ship in the device are already the "Full BSL" in that they support all commands and don't require any RAM loading.

- If you haven't already looked, your next step should be to go to document: SLAA450. There you will find BSL source code. For that device, you can take an existing UART BSL, and modify it (mostly RAM size and port pins) to work on the 5522.

Hi,

I think the USB capable BSL is to big for the BSL flash memory. So only a minimum BSL is loaded to communicate over USB with the PC. From there on you can load a bigger BSL into the RAM and have the full functionality.

This is not necessary, when you overwrite the normal USB BSL with your custom UART only BSL.

Thanks for the clarification with SLAA450 and the fact that the existing BSL code is in the zip file. One more step with my development. Is there a code download area with an already put together UART BSL for the MSP430F5522?

Hi,

Currently: No. I should have one up by the end of the month however. In order to port the 5438A BSL though, I think the effort should be minor: change the linker command file to the correct RAM sizes, change the BSL_device_file.h, and possibly change the Peripheral Interface file to the correct Timer registers.
