MSP430F5438A: maximum frequency

Part Number: MSP430F5438A

Customer would like to get datasheet clarification on the maximum frequency specification for MSP430F5438A:

I see in the datasheet that DCO can go up to 135MHz.  However the maximum frequency is 25MHz.  Can we have the DCO set to above 25MHz and then divide this down to stay within the 25MHz specification.  Or the maximum DCO that we can generate is 25MHz?

Thanks

Viktorija

  • Hey Viktorija,

It should be possible.  The max processor frequency is 25MHz, but if the DCO runs faster and is divided down then before sourcing any of the MCU clocks then it should be alright.

Even though it does seem possible, I can't think of any reason to actually do this.

I would also like to note that the 135MHz frequency listed in the datasheet for the DCO at it's highest setting is a "Max" limit, meaning this is an absolute theoretical max.  This only guaranteed that the DCO will never exceed this frequency.  The same line shows a 60MHz Min limit, so the actual frequency will be somewhere in between and will vary from device to device.

    Thanks,

    JD
