MSP430FR6043: Ultrasonic Transducer selection

Part Number: MSP430FR6043
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDM-02003

I am working on a new gas flow metering project. I would like to understand what should I look for during transducer selection. I have the options of selecting 200kHz, 400kHz or 500kHz. Can you explain what the trade-offs will be picking one over the other. I want to keep the transducer cost low. Thank you

Kripa

  • Hi Kripa,

If you are working with existing ultrasonic pipe design, you should pick the transducer that pipe was designed for. Smaller pipe designs can work better with higher frequency transducers. While higher frequency transducers may give a better standard deviation in measurements, they won't necessarily exhibit better consistency across transducer pairs.

One of the key care-abouts of gas meter design is the zero flow drift of the transducer over the anticipated operating temperature.  This drift determines the minimum detectable flow that can be measured since it's not anticipated that every meter will be calibrated over temperature to compensate for this drift.  If you are trying to meet requirements for US and Europe, you should select transducers which will exhibit around 500ps of drift over the -30/-25C to 55C temperature range.

Your evaluation should involve multiple transducer pairs.  It's also important to consider the bandwidth of the transducers and how variable their resonance shifts are over temperature. Lower bandwidth transducers(20kHz) will need to have more repeatable resonance shifts than higher bandwidth transducers in order to give more consistent absolute time of flight measurements across transducer pairs.

Do you have an existing pipe design? (or are you new to ultrasonic pipe design?)

  • Leo,

I am new to pipe design, would you have any reference material for pipe design? Thanks

    Kripa

  • Hi Kripa,

Yes, I can send you the design files for the 200kHz 3D printable tube we used in the TIDM-02003 design guide.  You should be able to use this tube as a starting point for your design.

    Please accept my friend request.

    BR,

    Leo
