MSP430FR6043: Device Selection for Ultrasonic Flow Measurement

Part Number: MSP430FR6043

I am new to ultrasonic method of metering for flow measurement. I have noticed that Texas Instruments has many devices that support this application. How can I make a selection? I have not made any decision on single or multi-chip architectures yet, but would like to get some help on this topic.

Please have a look at the page below which discusses our ultrasonic flow solutions. There is some good material here including training videos and how to get started for either water or gas flow metering.

In our ultrasonic solution, we use a waveform capture based approach instead of the typical zero crossing based approach. The application note below gives a good detailed look at how approach is implemented and the benefits.

Hi Kripa,

Our TDC solutions are targeted for lower frequency/longer range applications. If you are looking for a higher frequency/higher accuracy/lower range solution for your application, I would recommend the MSP430FR6043. If you are looking for a longer range/lower transducer frequency solution for applications such as level sensing, I would recommend our TDC solutions. The MSP43FR6043 supports transducer frequencies from 133kHz to 2.4MHz. Our TDC solutions support transducer frequencies from 40kHz to 1MHz. Can you tell me what specific application you are trying to address?

Leo,

I am looking at using it for flow-measurement for liquid. What are these TDC solutions that you talk about? It seems like there is an overlap of transducer frequency support between MSP430 and TDC devices. Which device would I select for liquid flow? Thank you

Hi Kripa,

For water flow measurements, I would recommend the MSP430FR6043. This solution uses a correlation approach which can give a much more accurate measurement result than Timer based(TDC) solutions.
