You might refer to the MSP432E4 Bootloader tutorial available as a SimpleLink Academy module.

Does a method exist where the BSL Rocket hardware is not needed?

The BSL Rocket tool is required only when using UART, I 2C, and SSI as the interface for performing application firmware update. It is not required when using either USB or Ethernet for performing application firmware update.
