MSP430F5524: Standby mode : current issue

Part Number: MSP430F5524

Hi TI experts,

Application : E-Cigar

status : MP

This project was mass-produced 1M in 2018. This year, they started production again at the request of end-buyers.

Their production plants measure the standby current of the board.

OK, NG standards are as follows.

Normal product : 0.25~0.5mA.

Recently there was a board that measured more than 0.5mA, and the quantity is more than 5000sets.

As a result of the SWAP test, it was found that the current consumption varies according to the MSP430F5524. The customer considers the MSP430F5524 to be defective.

Current of abnormal product : 0.8~1.8mA

Do you think it is the current consumption tolerance of MSP430F5524?

If not, please suggest a solution to the problem.

If i attach the customer's firmware, can you review it?

It is a very urgent situation. Please respond quickly.

Thanks,

Downey Kim.

  • Hi,

    1. What do you mean "the quantity is more than 5000sets"?

    2. What about the failure probability?

    3. Can you give more details about "it was found that the current consumption varies according to the MSP430F5524. "?

    4. I don't think it is a code problem, because it happens not on all products.

    5. The current dissipation is 290 µA/MHz at 8 MHz. So the max current can reach about 2mA.

  • Hi Eason,

    1. What do you mean "the quantity is more than 5000sets"?

    -> Number of failure ICs.

    2. What about the failure probability?

    -> 5% of production

    3. Can you give more details about "it was found that the current consumption varies according to the MSP430F5524. "?

-> Although the same firmware was applied, current consumption differs depending on the MSP430F5524 unit.

    4. I don't think it is a code problem, because it happens not on all products.

-> If so, is it the deviation of the MSP430F5524 unit?

    5. The current dissipation is 290 µA/MHz at 8 MHz. So the max current can reach about 2mA.

    Thanks,

    Downey.

  • Hi Downey,

Do you mean customer put the good one to replace the issued MSP430F5524 unit, and then the problem is solved?

I assumption is that the problem may lies on over-spec. Can you post the schematic?

What about the difference between the one mass-produced 1M in 2018 and in 2020? That may be the key point.

Can you connect to TI FAEs, I think we need more information to evaluate this problem.

    Eason
