MSP430F5529: MSP430 to act both as a USB device and USB Host

Part Number: MSP430F5529
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB1210

Hi Team,

We need microcontroller MSP430 to act both as a USB device and USB Host.

Since none of the MSP430 has USB OTG, please check and confirm if the IC: TUSB1210  could be used to achieve UART to USB OTG?

Please help to implement MSP430 with USB OTG using any external ICs.

Thanks,

Denny

  • Hi Denny,

The TUSB1210 requires an ULPI interface, which MSP430 does not support.

Have you looked at the MSP432E401Y?  It has everything you need.

  • Hi Dennis,

We need to have a ultra low power consuming microcontroller, as our application is battery powered with just I2C, SPI, and USB OTG. Hence we wanted to use MSP430.

In TUSB1210 datasheet, it is mentioned that it supports a UART mode with below mentioned pins.

    Pin DATA0 as UART_TX

    Pin DATA1 as UART_RX

Kindly check and let us know if there are any better ICs. Else we will use MSP432, but I'm worried of power consumption.

    Thanks,

    Denny

  • Hi Denny,

Yes, you are correct.  I searched around to see if we have any collateral on TUSB1210 + any MSP430 and couldn't find anything.  Let me ask around.

  • Hi Denny,

No luck finding collateral showing how to use TUSB1210 + any MSP430.  I'm sorry but I'm not going to be able to come up with a solution for you other than recommending MSP432.

Regarding MSP432, I know you are concerned about power.  What is your power consumption budget when operating on battery?

Is it the active power (MCU running) or is the standby power (MCU in standby mode) that concerns you the most?

  • Hi Dennis,

Our concern would be both on Active and standby modes. Active mode could be somewhere upto 50 mA current consumption. Standby mode could be in micro ampere range.

But in Active mode, MSP432 has more than 100 mA consumption and in standby mode with RTC, it is in micro Ampere. So with MSP432, concern would be with Active mode.

MSP430 has current consumption of 10mA in active mode.

    Thanks,

    Denny

  • Hi Denny,

Let me check with 432 folks to see if they can offer a solution.  I'm also reaching out to some different folks regarding the MSP430 + TUSB1210.

My apologies this is taking so long to get you a solution.

  • Hi Denny,

I'm sorry. I'm coming up empty handed on this topic.
