Echoing characters in Hyperterminal

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F2616

Hi,

Iam using MSP430F2616 controller in which Iam trying to echo characters using the sample code of 9600 baud rate. Few of the characters like 'x' 'v' 't' are echoing properly but few like 'b' 'c' 'h' 'd' are echoed along with their capital letters and some other letters. Please suggest what could be the problem.

  • Possibly a baudrate conflict. Maybe you're producing framing errors because the baudrates do not match good enough on both sides. It can trigger framing errors and create erroneous characters

It's also possible that your physical connection is faulty, causing certain bit patterns to fail. The PC expects signals as +-3V..+-12V while the MSP emits 0..3V with reverse polarity. If oyu don't have a level shifter in between (such as a MAX 232) it won't work.

Thirst possible cause is the DTR/DSR signal. Some software (I think including HyperTerminal) requires DTR to be emitted from the remote side (and sets DSR). If you loop them back directly, all is fine, but if not, the signals on the other lines may trigger a 'client unavailable' event which may cause teh connection to flicker.

If it are always the same characters which work or not, I'd give the first one (baudrate problem) a try.

  • There are two good open source terminals: Putty and RealTerm. I've used both successfully. Putty is quite popular for other reasons, but it works well with serial ports and it's free.

  • We're using putty for SSH and VPN connections. Something that's not supported by HyperTerm.

I still sue HyperTerm for development, because it allows me to set up different configurations and save them as links, completely with the window position etc.

So I can jsu tclick on two links and have two windows with the correct serial connection (or telnet) open at the same position I arranged them last time. Sometimes these are even 3 or 4, depending on what I do and want to observe.
I doubt this is possible with putty.

Every tool has its function and may be the best one to choose for a particular use. The tool the serves most purposes, usually does worst in the average.

  • Jens,

Thank you, I could resolve the peoblrm. It was baud rate isuue.
