CCS/MSP-FET: MSP-FET asked for firmware update, now not working anymore

Part Number: MSP-FET
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH, MSP430I2041

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hi,

some time ago, my MSP-FET asked for a firmware update while trying to flash a firmware to an attached MSP430i2041 in Uniflash. I clicked on yes, the update was seemingly happening, but then I couldn't flash anything anymore.

UniFlash now stops witn "TI MSP430 USB1/MSP4  Error connecting to the target: Unknown device" On the MSP-FET, the "Mode LED is blinking ON(long)-OFF(short)-...

I then tried to flash a project in CCS, there I get the error message:

"Error connecting to the target: Unknown device"

Is there a way to unbrick my FET, by flashing a firmware to it by hand (using another FET)?

Under Windows, the FET is still visible (MSP Application UART1 (COM27) and MSP Debug Interface (COM28)

MSP-FET: 190101159

CCS: 10.1.1.00004

UniFlash:6.1.0.2829

Thank you very much for any help

  • Hello Pio,

When you did the initial firmware update, did it complete successfully?

Are you sure that you have your target device connected properly to the FET for either SBW or JTAG?  If you use a different FET with the otherwise same setup, does it work properly?

You could also look at the recovery process described in section 5.6.5.3 of the users guide below.

  • Hello Eddie

Thank you very much for your help. I tried to proceed as written in teh document you linked p23.
The target device is connected properly, I can program it on another FET; also on an old (gray) FET430. It's only this one (Rev 2.0.6 that stopped behaving properly.

    Here's the process I followed:

    Open MSP-FET
    Bridge J2
    Connect to USB
    Remove bridge
    Start ccs
    Click debug in a project
Click recover -> recovery runs through
Click update -> firmware update runs through
"Error initializing emulator: Interface communication error"

    Click retry
"Error initializing emulator: MSP-FET430UIF is already in use"  -> strange as I have a new black MSP-FET and not a FET430UIF

    Disconnect, reconnect, click debug:
"Error initializing emulator: NO USB FET was found"

Now it doesn't get recognized at all anymore and the green LED is not lighting up if I am trying to short J2

(Windows now only recognizes an unknown USB device after some time, as seen in the device manager:)

"Dieses Gerät wurde angehalten, weil es Fehler gemeldet hat. (Code 43)
Fehler bei einer Anforderung des USB-Gerätedeskriptors."

"Unbekanntes USB-Gerät (Fehler beim Anfordern einer Gerätebeschreibung.)"

    "Das Gerät USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\6&6d80a8b&0&1 wurde konfiguriert.

    Treibername: usb.inf
    Klassen-GUID: {36fc9e60-c465-11cf-8056-444553540000}
    Treiberdatum: 06/21/2006
    Treiberversion: 10.0.19041.488
    Treiberanbieter: Microsoft
    Treiberabschnitt: BADDEVICE.Dev.NT
    Treiberrang: 0xFF0000
    Passende Geräte-ID: USB\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE
    Treiber mit niedrigerem Rang: usb.inf:USB\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE:00FF2000
    Gerät wurde aktualisiert: false
    Übergeordnetes Gerät: USB\VID_05E3&PID_0610\5&18a6c8f4&0&12
    "

I am not sure why it recognized it as an older FET430UIF at some point? Now it seems to not respond to anything anymore..

If you have any further ideas I could try, I'd be graceful.

    Best regards

    Pio
